I awoke with a start. I was sitting in the park with my laptop when a giant, gloved finger came out of my peripheral vision and pressed the screen closed, folding neatly in my lap.
“You need to stop.” a voice said from above me.
I looked up, following the long, immaculate white glove. I passed the elbow and saw the brief spot of bare bicep before I met with the shoulder and top of a Sailor’s uniform, white with green at the shoulders. I followed further up to a large, smiling face, brown hair held up in a high ponytail gravity causing it to flow back to earth to run down the side of her face.
“Sailor Jupiter? What are you doing here?” I said.
“I was watching you. I didn’t want to interrupt unless I could tell for sure, but I can see a lot seems to be on your mind.”
She was seated near me, though she still towered over me. The pathway was still clear as she sat on the grass to the side of my bench. It was a clear day. The warm, clean Spring air was around us and it smelled of freshly mowed grass. I didn’t even hear her approach. Given her towering height, I would have at least felt her footsteps, but I guess I was so engrossed in what I was doing, that I simply was outside of the world for a time.
“You looked sad, and I wanted to make sure it wasn’t just a passing thought.” Sailor Jupiter said to me, kindness flowing from her voice and falling onto my body.
“It’s that apparent, huh?”
“You were always bad at hiding your emotions.”
She lowered her hand in front of the bench. Fingers in a natural curl. She was used to holding those so much smaller than her. I trusted her. This wasn’t the first time she had offered such a service to me. I returned my laptop to my backpack and zipped it shut, bringing it with me to climb upon her white, gloved hand, and sat down. I learned it was easier on her to not stand while she was trying to handle me.
With practiced ease, Sailor Jupiter stood up, and carried me deeper into the park, finding a hill that was unoccupied. Seating herself, she leaned back onto the gentle slope of a hill. To most, it would be a brisk walk to climb. For her, it was like laying back on the arm of a couch.
One arm tucked behind her head to act as a cushion, while the other gently cupped me to the top of her chest. We knew each other well enough, and I was honored she trusted me so much. I laid flat upon her chest, closing my eyes as I took a moment to savor the contact with a friend. At this point, a friend is all I need.
She held me there, stretching out her long legs and crossing her boots at her ankles. We lay there in the midday sun, comforting one another. She may have already known, but wouldn’t tell me, but I did need her. I needed her strength and her kindness. I was honored to have such a person in my life, and just for a little bit, let me simply exist with her and forget about what was around me in a more positive light.
